THE FOLLOWING IS A REVIEW OF THE FIRST BOMB TASTY YUM-YUMS SHOW ON APRIL 7th, 2006 :
"Did You Like it?"
Saw this concert the other day, The Bomb Tasty Yum-Yums. It was the second concert I'd seen at the Candlebelly. The first being a rock musical a la rocky horror mixed with Mad Max. A historical postmodern (in that it involved audience participation and was put on in the belly of a candle) musical detailing, in metaphor, the waste laid by the bird flu. The Candlebelly, which is really just Oh the Sun!'s house on Fourteenth, was home base for those artistic Westerpunks run amok.

Before the show, they jittered and paced their ramshackle living room, stepping around or toying with pianos and various homemade instruments. Or they randomly tried to chit chat with the crowd, the rest of whom they knew. After a few frantic phone calls turned into enough people, it started.

"This is kinda like a going away party... it is, it's a party for Steve. And we are the Bomb Tasty Yum-Yums. THANK YOU!"
Nathan, the lead singer, in a dark but vibrantly pin striped suit and his father's out-of-date red tie swaying, started to play a little melody on synthesizer.

The...Nathan's(?) ... enclave of three kid-faerie-girls lay asleep in a circle below him. As the tune got louder and he banged his vocal cords into a croon, they all rose up and found their instruments to burst their fingers away on bongos, piano, and synth. Steve sat behind a quarter wall and attacked a little rhythm with plywood found out back.
From song to song, the one or two minute ditties ended abruptly... and though the singer pointed out, "Wow, are these songs short," and the crowd agreed, there was something appropriate there. Him tapping away in sneakers. Steve in a plain white dock worker tee-shirt. The girls in thrift, or, more likely, pawn shop-style wicked prom dresses. The songs wound up to an explosion and popped.
To battery the crowd's energy between tuning and technical outages, these kid-faerie-girls would run into us, the twenty-odd twenty-somethings, and gave hugs. Or tagged (in the, hit you in the nut sack sense) with easter eggs that held hidden messages and candy. Mine said, "I love you."

A loose story was built around the myth of the house, the faeries, and Steve's personal travels. In a rousing play of Cindy Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", the crowd, in full swing, witnessed Steve dawning a skirt. A mock of Skully's Ladies 80's if ever there was. But also the whole thing a tribute to the magic and wonder in the Columbus around us. How we connect to the 'out there,' be it our own weirdness, the oddity of the ever-present 'other,' the forty-nine states we sometimes forget, or even Puerto Rico, by way of being a heart to it all. The end song proclaimed love of animal nature. We chanted, "We are all animals!" Our heads pelted with pound puppies and various stuffed Petradons, elephants, dragons, and dogs, we chanted all the louder.

When it ended, and the spell of the moment evaporated with, "Was it okay? Did you like it?" We couldn't answer, had gotten lost... and needed time to come back from whatever Xanadu the musically induced mental journey had taken us. As the fairy world turned back into a cluttered old Candlebelly and those around us turned back into people one might see at any other show, some stumbled out the door.

I imagined being at a small Flaming Lips concert after The Clouds Taste Metallic. Later, I had this conversation:
Squanderdalfast: how long are you staying up?
hedoneit: idano
hedoneit: i wanna kill myself after that show
hedoneit: ^- that's not a cry for help
hedoneit: dont worry
hedoneit: all im saying is i'm super lame
Squanderdalfast: yeah... I wanted to follow you
Squanderdalfast: and give you a hug
Squanderdalfast: but nick had to get home
hedoneit: tsalright
Squanderdalfast: i mean
Squanderdalfast: society at large likes you better than them
Squanderdalfast: I think
Squanderdalfast: does that help?
hedoneit: fuck society
hedoneit: society is a bitch
hedoneit: meh
hedoneit: tomorrow i will start being sweet.

And that pretty much sums it up. The Bomb Tasty Yum-Yums are so sweet and those kids relate so well, one has to compare, and in so doing want to kill themselves... or be much cooler tomorrow.

Yes, we liked it.

Myke Rock wears a lot of hats. He came to prominence as a member of one of the first punk rock bands in Columbus in the late 70's early 80's and later as a gateway to getting Ohioans on the trashy daytime talk-show circuit; but he's always been more interested in local bands than Jerry Springer. He is currently the bassist for The Johnny Rockets and The Decals, serves on the Community Festival Entertainment Committee, produces Myke Rock Radio: "The Best Radio That Isn't!", and performs solo in the MultiFestival Showcase Series. Rock founded the statewide series nearly three years ago and has played in 114 of the 120 events. See what they're saying, check out Myke Rock's pages, listen to a song or two, and more, below!

Seeing a solo set by Myke Rock, who accompanied himself on bass, was the surprise of the fest for me. I was impressed. His set closer, the Beatles "Strawberry Fields Forever", was TERRIFIC! Correctly played parts and all!
~John Petric, The Other Paper, Columbus (Comfest 2004)

I was lucky enough to have caught the MultiFest gig at Fats Billiards a few months ago as I was reminded my friends in The Bogtrodders were also playing. I saw Myke Rock play his set along with a few Beatles tunes on bass and I was Blown away! I'm a huge Beatles fan and also a bass player, what a treat!
~DJ Pug

I was stunned to hear Fender bass and a soulful voice singing a song about where scum comes from. Like a deer caught in headlights, I severely dug his set. I was absolutely amazed. ~I.D. FLUX, Internet
